Slimy, horrible creatures that they are, wherever they are present in our waters, pike eat loads of them. Where they abound in numbers, in places like the Fens or the Broads of Norfolk, some pike have evolved specifically-widened jaws just so they can swallow bigger ones! In places like these it pays to fish with big baits if you want to catch the bigger fish, so I tie these copies up with an extra-wide profile to maximise visibility in the sometimes coloured water. It's like fishing with a paper aeroplane on your line! These flies catch consistently well on the gravel pits around the East Midlands where we live, try them on waters near you, and remember this; it's second only to fishing with a livebait!
