Look at these beauties! I must admit that I don't get excited very often about pike fly materials, I leave that to Uncle Greg, but I love these!

There is no doubt that pike can locate prey by sound and do so on a regular basis, especially in dirty or coloured water. These plastic rattles contain ball-bearings that rattle and clank whenever you move your fly, thereby helping old Esox to home-in on your lure when it's out of sight.

They are easy to use and extremely durable, not like the old-fashioned glass models that we used to use. You can tie them in almost anywhere on the hook, although I prefer to tie them roughly in the centre of the shank where they balance the fly best. A good method is to use a piece of mylar tubing to put them in, and you can use more than one this way if you want maximum noise and effect! In water they are virtually weightless, which means the action of the fly is unimpeded.

Some of our friends are carrying out a season-long project to determine the effectiveness of using these rattles in their flies. Although studies are so far incomplete, their findings so far seem to suggest that flies tied incorporating these rattles in their design regularly out-score those without, and by a good margin! We will publish the results of these tests when they have been concluded.

Imagine these fished in a surface popper, or deep on a sinking line, fished with jerky movements!
